DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Kelly’s projects and repertoire are wide-ranging and diverse. From Mozart to commissioned works by her peers\, she is both deeply experienced in the classical vocal canon and engaged in new creation. The first woman and first American named as Director of Musical Studies at the Vienna State Opera\, Kathleen’s operatic experience is the backbone of her career. Trained at the San Francisco Opera\, she joined the company’s music staff and moved from there to a long association with the Metropolitan Opera. She was head of music at Houston Grand Opera\, and music director of the Berkshire Opera before moving to Vienna. Since returning to the USA in 2015\, Kathleen has conducted at the Glimmerglass Festival\, Wolf Trap Opera\, Arizona Opera\, El Paso Opera\, Opera Columbus\, the Merola Program\, and the Alexandria Symphony\, and has been a regular visiting coach for the prestigious young artist programs of Chicago Lyric Opera\, Los Angeles Opera\, Houston Grand Opera\, Washington National Opera\, and the Canadian Opera Company. Recently she joined the Cincinnati Opera to assist on the workshop of Matthew Aucoin’s Eurydice\, slated for a 2019 premiere with the Los Angeles Opera.

He has received multiple fellowships from Yaddo\, the MacDowell Colony\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, and awards from the Liguria Study Center (Bogliasco\, Italy)\, the Fundacion Valparaiso (Spain)\, the Oberpfaelzer Kuenstlerhaus (Bavaria)\, and ASCAP. DESCRIPTION:Darrell Babidge is chair of the voice faculty at The Juilliard School. Darrell was born in Bournemouth\, England. He graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in the U.K in vocal performance and received his Master’s degree from Brigham Young University and his Professional degree in vocal performance from the Manhattan School of Music\, funded by Birgitt Nilsson. While still a student\, he performed the title role of Britten’s ‘Owen Wingrave’ with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and London Philharmonic Orchestra. Darrell has performed in Europe\, America and Asia\, and in venues that include the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall. \n\n\n\nDarrell joined the Juilliard Vocal Arts department in the fall of 2019. He also began teaching the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artists and the Fellow Scholars of Lin-Manual Miranda (‘Hamilton’) in 2020. He was on the voice faculty at Brigham Young University from 2006-2019\, and taught the Utah Opera Resident Artists and the Arizona Opera Studio Artists as their resident teacher. During the summer he is a vocal coach with Dolora Zajick at the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices\, and will be teaching at Santa Fe Opera this year.

SUMMARY:Master Class with Kelly Kuo\, Conductor
DESCRIPTION:Praised by the Cincinnati Enquirer as “a leader of exceptional musical gifts\, who has a clear technique on the podium and an impressive rapport with audiences\,” Maestro Kelly Kuo brings a dynamic versatility and nuance to a diverse repertoire\, which includes over 90 operas and an expansive symphonic repertoire as well. Currently Artistic Director of Oregon Mozart Players and Associate Artistic Director of American Lyric Theater\, his recent operatic engagements include Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Seattle Opera\, Cincinnati Opera\, Indianapolis Opera\, Kentucky Opera\, Anchorage Opera\, and the Janiec Opera Company of the Brevard Music Center. In 2008\, Maestro Kuo became the first conductor of Asian descent to lead a performance at the Lyric Opera of Chicago\, making his company debut with Porgy and Bess. He has since returned to lead the Chicago premiere of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird and performances featuring artists of the Ryan Opera Center.

SUMMARY:Master Class with Melissa Wegner\, Metropolitan Opera
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Wegner joined the artistic staff of the Metropolitan Opera in 2011 and currently serves as Executive Director of the National Council Auditions. She hears hundreds of young singers annually and is passionate about assisting them with their career development. Additionally\, Ms. Wegner hears artists in stage and screening auditions at the Met and works with the Met’s New Works Commissioning program to cast its workshops. A judge for the District\, Region and National MONC Auditions\, Ms. Wegner has also adjudicated the SAI Vocal Competition\, the McCammon Voice Competition\, and the Belvedere Competition in South Africa and Russia. As a soprano\, Ms. Wegner has performed opera\, concerts and recitals in the United States and Europe. She joined New York City Opera as a Supertitles Associate and continues this work on a freelance basis with organizations including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, BAM\, and Opera Orchestra of New York. Ms. Wegner is a member of Families of FANA WNY\, which fundraises to support the orphanage in Colombia from which she was adopted. She is a Trustee of the Foundation Board of SUNY Potsdam\, and founding member of the Alumni Board of Bard Conservatory’s Graduate Vocal Arts Program. Ms. Wegner holds degrees from Bard College\, The Manhattan School of Music\, and The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.
